The Ming Dynasty lasted between 1368 and 1644 A.D. and is famous for the construction of the Great Wall of China, which was meant to defend China from its enemies and provide a barrier to the outside world. Emperor Hongwu, the founder of the Ming Dynasty, was a peasant who cultivated the arts during his reign. The Ming Dynasty saw an extraordinary period of innovation in ceramic manufacture. Kilns investigated new techniques in design and shapes, showing a predilection for color and painted design, and an openness to foreign forms.
One of the most famous artifacts to emerge was the Ming vase, due in part to cultivation of porcelain artistry during this time. Identifying a Ming vase, including in photographs, requires some basic knowledge of the artistry involved.
